The fine and rare exhibition quality model of a 7 1/4 inch gauge Great Western Railway Class 47xx 2-8-0 locomotive and tender No 4708, built by David Aitken from the original drawings and patterns based on the original full size engine, fine cab detail replicating the original engine in almost every detail with wooden planked floor, checker plate, drivers' seats, brass framed windows, the copper boiler having fittings including scale water gauge with brass protector frame, scale size pressure and vacuum gauges, lever operated sliding firebox doors with chain, regulator connected with lubricator valve, safety valve, blower, lubrication system, brakes, clack and blowdown valves, chassis details include working leaf springs, twin outside cylinders, piston valves and inside Stephenson s valve gear. The fine quality cab detail including condensing coil for the hydrostatic lubricator in roof, drain cocks with associated pipework, lubricators, hand and steam brake gear, injectors and whistle, further detail includes connecting rods, fine riveting work, vacuum hoses, couplings, steps, hand and lamp irons. The 3500-4000 gallon tender built at Swindon Works circa 1920 and is fitted with water scoop, tool boxes, hand-operated brake gear to axles and brass faced water gauge level. The model finished in Great Western Railway period 1920's green and black livery with polished brightwork together with fitted handrails, steps and lamp irons. Overall length 267cm. Cap width 38cm. The Great Western Railway (GWR) 4700 Class was a class of nine 2-8-0 steam locomotives designed by George Jackson Churchward. They were introduced in 1919 for heavy mixed traffic work. Although primarily designed for fast freight, the class also sometimes hauled passenger trains, notably heavy holiday expresses in the summer months. These locomotives were often referred to as Night Owls .
