A RARE EMBROIDERED-APPLIQUE SILK BROCADE THANGKA QING DYNASTY, 18TH/19TH CENTURY The composition is finely worked with embroidered appliques, each well executed with satin stitches and outlined with couched gold thread, the central image is of Meitreya wearing a patchwork robe, the two hands held together in a gesture of dharmacakra mudra , 'the turning of the wheel of the law', growing to one side a lotus bloom supporting a kundika and the other side with a stupa, seated before a multi-layered mandorla with legs crossed in vajrasana on a lotus base, above a platform flanked with a pair of mythical lions, attended by two Luohans and surrounded by various deities and lamas, framed within orange and yellow silk brocade borders, the outer blue border with couched gold thread of stylised scrolls flanking a patchwork of square on the lower section 62 3/4 in. x 34 1/4 in. (159.5 x 87 cm.)
