Saddle ring on the lower tang. Patchbox in right side of stock. .50 caliber, rifled. Matching numbers on barrel, primer door, upper tang, lower tang and stock. The patchbox door does not match, although that's common on these. Lever pin is a period replacement. Confederate states purchased most of the 1st Model Maynard arms directly from the Massachusetts Arms Co. early in 1861, depleting the leftover stock and all new production, and kept the guns in service throughout the war. The prevalence of 1st Model Maynards in Confederate service was so great that the Confederate Ordnance Bureau published a field manual on them. CONDITION: Gun retains a pleasing even age patina overall with some areas of very light pitting. Markings are clear. Bore has strong rifling with light pitting. The tang screw is broken off at the threaded end, but still engages the upper tang. The very end of the opening lever is also broken off, has been for a long time. Stock has dings and handling marks, wear to the varnish. Shows use. Fine mechanical function.
