A rare 19th century Benham and Froud recumbent lion copper jelly mould together with a good collection of twenty four similar period Benham and Froud copper jelly and confectionery moulds of elaborate circular and oval castle and ring formthe lion mould of oval form with flowing mane, the plain plinth sides with orb and cross stamped factory mark and numbered '82', the circular castle moulds including an 'Alexandra Cross' or cruciform mould marked 'REGISTERED APRIL 22, 1865' and a circular eight point 'Brunswick star' mould marked 'REGISTERED SEPTEMBER 15, 1864', the moulds mostly with orb and cross stamped factory marks, the plain circular ring mould marked with 'BENHAM & SONS, WIGMORE ST LONDON' strap factory mark,
the lion mould, 17cm high, 22cm wide, 14.5cm deep approximately, the other moulds, largest, 14.5cm, smallest 5cm high, widest 17cm wide (25)FootnotesThe firm of Benham & Froud was established in Chandos Street, London, in 1785.
In 1821 the company made the orb and cross for the dome of St. Pauls Cathedral and subsequently adopted the symbol as their factory trade mark. As the majority of jelly moulds by this maker have three digit model number, the two digit factory number to the lion mould might suggest it to be an earlier example of the factory's output, perhaps made in the second quarter of the 19th century.
For a similar lion mould albeit on a fluted plinth, see Bonhams Oxford, 30th September 2015, Lot 305.
