NB This interesting contemporary illustration of Maori dance and facial tattooing was originally part of the collection of Hubert Horatio Shirley Morant (1840-1930) of the 68th (Durham) Light Infantry. During his service in the 1860's New Zealand Land Wars he was acquainted with Gordon Robley (later Major General) of that regiment. Robley was a prominent collector and authority on Mokomokai, and author of the book Moko; or Maori Tattooing, Chapman and Hall 1896, which is offered in this auction, see Lot 654. See illustration
