A PRESENTATION SWORD TO THE LIEUTENANT-COLONEL-COMMANDANT OF THE ROYAL KIRKCALDY VOLUNTEERS Woolley, Deakin & Dutton, circa 1808 Of Light Cavalry (1796) type with curved, fullered blade (slightly bent at the point) blued for its entire length and with very extensive gilt decoration including oakleaves, scrolls etc. and an elaborate trophy of arms (surmounted by a Scottish bonnet) as well as a figure of St. Andrew, another of a Highland officer with drawn broadsword, an armorial shield (of Douglas of Kinglassie) with motto LOCK SICKER, a star of the Order of the Thistle with its motto NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT, the unit's initials RKV, the motto VIGILANDO MUNIO, another armorial shield (that of Kirkcaldy), the Scottish Royal Crest and other emblems, maker's details and WARRANTED and, on a blued panel, the following inscription (now rubbed and partly obscured '... ESQ., LIEUTENANT-COLONEL COMMAND ... COMMISSIONED OFFICERS, DRUMMERS, ... TESTIMONY OF RESPECT AND ESTEEM ...' and on the gilt section at the forte, the date 1808, chequered one-piece ivory grip (chipped), ornate gilt stirrup-hilt (backstrap loose) with fine matt gilt lion-head pommel, the knucklebow in the form of twin sprays of wheat, the langets with Classical trophy (including fasces) in relief, the leather scabbard with its three finely-engraved and chased ornate gilt mounts (with two suspension rings) with theme of thistles, trophies of arms, Union shield etc. the locket engraved with maker's details as on sword 28½in. blade
