Beschreibung:

A POWERFUL IVORY NETSUKE OF SHOKI THE DEMON QUELLER BY MIWA Katalognummer: NE1118-130 Ivory netsuke Japan 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Shoki the Demon Queller is a popular netsuke motif. He always has a fierce expression, a full beard as well as a straight Chinese ken sword, as he originates from China, where he is known as Zhong Kui; after he banished the fever ghosts haunting the Emperor Xuanzong, he was appointed imperial demon hunter. In this large netsuke, he is wearing a garment carved with rich folds and an oversized, bowl-shaped hat. The small oni has crawled into Shoki’s hair and is well protected under his large hat. However, Shoki has (finally) caught him by his clawed foot, which is mirrored by the demon hunter’s triumphant, grimacing expression. A very well-crafted, dense and lively as well as humorous work! Signed on the side on the garment MI-WA. There were several netsuke masters with this name; the second character is slightly abbreviated. Himotoshi through the sleeve and back. HEIGHT 8 CM Condition: Excellent condition with deep patina; age crack on the back Provenance: German private collection Schätzpreis 估價: € 2.000 Startpreis 起拍價: € 1.000 -
