A PORTABLE SMOKING SET edo period (19th century) Comprising a pipe in leather case, leather tobacco pouch and ivory manju netsuke, the pipe silver with short bamboo mid-section cast at the bowl-end with a south-sea islander, finished with a shakudo patina, who is standing on rocks surrounded by crashing waves dragging a large section of coral with a rope, the coral inlaid in the mouth-end of the pipe which is similarly cast with waves; the pouch fitted with a soft metal clasp in the form of a shishi and peonies and multi-strand metal cord attaching to the large ivory netsuke cast in high relief with the head of a guardian king, traces of shakudo and gilt patina present--pipe 10in. (25.3cm.) long, hairline crack to netsuke, leather worn in places
