A PARCEL-GILT SILVER REPOUSSE-DECORATED OCTAGONAL STEM CUPLiao Dynasty
Finely chased with leafy sprays and raised repoussé 'cloud' scrolls over ring-punched 'fish roe' ground, the high foot decorated with a lotus leaf rising from the beaded rim, the panels and mouth rim also with beaded boarders, the silver surface contrasting the parcel-gilt areas.

Compare present example to the eight-sided parcel-gilt stem cup with beaded frames and a ring handle near the rim, from the Uldry Collection published in the catalogue of the exhibition organized by the Museum Rietberg, Zürich, Chinesisches Gold und Silber: die Sammlung Pierre Uldry, Zürich, 1994, p. 146, cat. no. 129. See also two faceted stem cups with beaded edges, each with a thumb handle by the rim, discovered from the tomb of Yelü Yuzhi and Chonggun at Hansumu, Aluke'erqin Banner, Inner Mongolia and now in the collection of the Research Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology of Inner Mongolia, illustrated by Hsueh-man Shen (ed.), Gilded Spendor: Treasures of China's Liao Empire (907-1125), Asia Society, New York, 2006, pp. 300-301, cat. no. 85, described as Five Dynasties, before 942. The overall form of the present stem cup also relates to a parcel-gilt silver octagonal-section stem cup decorated in repoussé with a musician in each panel and framed by beaded edges at the borders and a loop handle on one side, excavated at Hejiacun, Xia'an, Shaanxi province, now in the collection of the Shaanxi History Museum, and included in the exhibition catalogue China: Dawn of a Golden Age, 200-750 AD, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2004, pp. 318-319, cat. no. 212.
