A PARCEL-GILT SILVER ICON OF THE MOTHER OF GOD OF SMOLENSK UNIDENTIFIED MAKER'S MARK, MOSCOW, 184? Rectangular, the figures realistically painted, the Christ child with his right hand raised in benediction, the Mother of God behind him, their garments and the border repoussé and chased with scrolling foliage, the halos gilt, the reverse with an inscription in Russian, marked throughout 7¼ in. (18.4 cm.) high The Russian inscription on the reverse of the icon reads: "On July 23, 1842, Prince Ivan and Princess Varvara Kugushev visited the city of Voronezh to bow in front of the relics of St. Mitrofan the wonderworker. In the monastery, they acquired this icon of the Mother of God of Smolensk, which was placed on the relics of St. Mitrofan and the miracle-working icon of the Mother of God of Smolensk. This icon was blessed."
