A PAIR OF WEDGWOOD BLACK BASALT EWERS after models supplied by John Flaxman , emblematic of Wine and Water, wine with a satyr handle holding the spout, above a goat's mask suspending vine swags, water with a triton handle and a dolphin's head suspending seaweed, on fluted stems and square bases (one handle repaired), impressed marks, circa 1800 -- 14½in. (37cm.) high Cf. Wolf, Mankowitz Wedgwood , pl. 68 for a pair of Wedgwood and Bentley examples. See also Robin Reilly and George Savage, The Dictionary of Wedgwood , p. 391, where it is noted that these were probably based on original antique models or on Renaissance metalwork (2)
