Beschreibung:

A PAIR OF LATE 18TH CENTURY BRONZE EWERS AFTER THE DESIGN BY NICOLAS DELAUNAY the 17th century style relief cast ewers raised on milled and stiff leaf spreading feet, with ribbon tied, reeded knop, the bodies decorated with a male and female roundel flanked by scrolling foliage and classical female masks, each with a handle modelled as a rampant panther, the panthers with finely chased fur, terminating at the body in a further classical mask, the necks with vitruvian scrolls, mid to dark brown patination, 29cm high The design of these ewers is derived from a silver gilt ewer by Nicolas Delaunay Paris, 1696-7 made for the private altar service of Cardinal Louis-Joseph de Montmorency-Laval and now at Poitiers Cathedral (M. Bimbenet-Privat, Les Orfèvres et L'Orfèvrerie de Paris au XVIIe Siècle, Paris, 2002, p. 244-247). Delaunay took inspiration from ancient vases which featured panthers, and presumably had seen the works of Enea Vico published in 1533, after the Roman engravers Agostino Veneziano and Marcantonio; which feature similar panthers. His design was subsequently copied in both silver and bronze throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. For examples see Sotheby's, London, 10 June 2008, lot 135.
