Mitchell’s important and rare New Universal Atlas of H.S. Tanner. Contains a number of significant maps: North America with Texas shown as part of the United States (California and southwest still part of Mexico); a separate map of Texas (the 1845 map of C.S. Williams); the various states of the U.S., many with insets of cities, etc.; separate plans of New York, Philadelphia, Washington DC; Mexico and Guatemala map attributed to H.N. Burroughs; plus South America and its regions, Europe and its various states, Asia, Africa, and etc. This copy lacks the final map called for in the table of contents No. 72 "Heights of Mountains and Lengths of Rivers" but includes an unlisted map "Oregon and Upper California" between Nos. 35-36. The engraved title page has a vignette, ‘First landing of Columbus in the New World.’” Condition: Chips lost to original cover label; occasional marginal toning, creasing to map #6, ink captioning to additional California map; very good.
