Octavia) mounted on a contemporary triple buckle bar and contained in a contemporary fitted carrying case, toned, very fine and better (3) Footnote William Glasspole was born on 12th January, 1833 and was appointed Assistant Engineer, 3rd class, on H.M.S. Horatio, 4th November, 1852. He served in the Baltic aboard H.M.S. Amphion, and in China aboard H.M.S. Chesapeake. Promoted to Chief Engineer 26th June, 1861, Glasspole joined H.M.S. Warrior on 7th August and served on her until 22nd November, 1864. H.M.S. Warrior was Britain's first sea-going armoured iron ship, laid down at Blackwall in the spring of 1859 and launched the following year. The first of the ironclads, H.M.S. Warrior survives today and is on display at Portsmouth. Glasspoles subsequent appointments included nearly 4 years in H.M.S. Octavia, during which time he served with the expedition to Abyssinia. He retired at his own request in January 1883, was granted the rank of Fleet Engineer in February 1886 and subsequently was in receipt of a Greenwich Hospital Pension.
