A mid to late 17th-Century ivory Dieppe diptych sundial, unsigned , with black colouring, double-lined borders and repeated poppy flower motif in each corner, folding brass support arm, two brass hooks and eyes and gnomon pin cover ( pin missing ) -- 7.3 x 6.3cm. (2 7/8 x 2½in.) Face Ia upper leaf, outer face: equinoctial hour dial numbered 1-12 (x2) with a polar dial inside with hours 8-12, 1-4; Face Ib upper leaf inner face: latitude scale down the right-hand edge and a pewter lunar volvelle with calendar scale on the outside followed by an hour scale 1-12 (x2), the lunar calendar disc ( loose ) numbered for days 1-30 with an aperture acting with the aperture in the top disc to show lunar phases; Face IIa lower leaf, inner face: horizontal dial with single hour scale 1-12 around a glazed compass with blued-iron needle, pewter eliptical hour scale for the magnetic azimuth dial, the base laid with a gazeteer of several French cities with four points labelled and a circumference degree scale ( some loss; hour scale stiff ); Face IIb lower leaf, outer face: central pewter disc ( some corrosion ) with perpetual calendar square and circumference calendar scale for setting the magnetic azimuth hour scale in the compass.
