(A) MAYNARD 2ND MODEL BREECHLOADING CARBINE MADE BY MASSACHUSETTS ARMS CO.

Maynard 2nd Model single shot breechloading carbine manufactured by Massachusetts Arms Company from 1863-1865 with a total of about 20,000 manufactured. 20" round barrel with octagon breech in .50 caliber with 2-leaf folding rear sight and blade front. Staple with saddle ring on right side of case hardened receiver. Walnut stock complete with military buttplate. Stock bears "AJH" and "JM" cartouches on left side of wrist in rectangles. During the American Civil War, these carbines were issued to the 9th and 11th Indiana as well as the 11th Tennessee. CONDITION: Excellent for its age, with nearly all of the original bluing remaining and mixing with a brown patina with scattered handling marks throughout. Frame retains bright case colors with light handling-related freckling. Stock is excellent with cartouches crisp, a protective layer of varnish added, and scattered handling marks. Mechanically fine. Bore is bright with crisp rifling. A high condition example.
