Late Meiji Period Both of rounded square form with overhanging lids and dense, rich nashiji interiors, embellished in gold, silver and iro-e takamakie, mother-of-pearl and togidashi, the exterior of the ryoshibako with superimposed closed and open books, the latter revealing differently-decorated pages, including a cormorant fishing scene at dusk, chatsumi (tea picking), a crow perched on a pine branch after a design by Motonobu, whilst the closed books are titled Kokin Wakashu (the Heian waka Imperial anthology and the Ise Monogatari respectively) on a rich mura-nashiji ground, the interior of the lid with a tasselled-tied box and folded shikishi (folded decorative papers) lying over a sprig of plum; the exterior of the suzuribako similarly lacquered with three books, the inside of the lid decorated with a fan and an inro with a shishi-netsuke lying on top of a sprig of flowering cherry, with detachable, fitted tray containing the ink-stone and silvered-metal mizuire in the form of a peony bloom; both unsigned; with two inner lacquer and outer wood storage boxes, the inside of both inscribed Kawanobe Iccho saku and bunko Kawanobe Iccho saku. The ryoshibako 13.2cm x 39cm x 31.5cm (5 3/16in x 15 5/16in x 12 3/8in), the suzuribako 4cm x 22cm x 24cm (1½in x 8 5/8in x 9½in). (9).
