A MASSIVE GERMAN RENAISSANCE GOLD SIGNET RING The rock-crystal bezel engraved with a shield of arms billety a lion rampant below initials H.V.S. over coloured foils, with pearled edge to the bezel, the shoulders and back of the bezel with trefoils and foliage, plain back to the hoop, circa 1550, finger size Z 1/2 The arms are possibly a prototype of the Royal Dutch arms and may have belonged to a branch of that family who settled in Germany. See Louda and Maclagan, Lines of Succession, Heraldry of the Royal Families of Europe, 1981, table 33 and p.71 where it states that the County of Nassau lies in Germany between the rivers Rhine and Main, and p.76 where the original arms of Nassau are described as a gold lion rampant on a blue field strewn with gold billets (originally blocks of wood).
