A MAGNIFICENT CASED 40-BORE DOUBLE-BARRELLED PERCUSSION OVAL-BORE RIFLE MADE FOR THE MAHARAJA OF JODPHUR CHARLES LANCASTER, 151 NEW BOND ST.T, LONDON, SERIAL NO. 3937, CIRCA 1865 With 27 ¼ in. (69.3 cm.) rebrowned twist signed barrels engraved 'PATENT SMOOTH BORE RIFLE' and sighted to 200 yards, case-hardened patent breeches numbered '2' and with pierced platinum plug and platinum-inlaid line, finely scroll engraved gold-washed tang, signed bolted locks and mounts including chequered butt-plate and sprung patchbox-cover, well-figured walnut pistolgrip stock with raised cheek-piece, blued triggers, vacant silver escutcheon, and original brass-mounted ramrod with worm, London proof marks, barrelsmith's mark 'CL' for Charles Lancaster, in original fitted brass-cornered oak case lined in deep blue velvet with accessories including Sykes leather-covered rifle flask, glass oil bottle, turned hardwood patchbox with ivory-inlaid lid, cleaning rod with ivory finial, and bullet-mould for conical bullets serial numbered to rifle 3943, the lid Charles Lancaster trade label
