A MAGNIFICENT AND VERY RARE PAIR OF LARGE IMPERIAL ZITAN CORNER-LEG ALTAR TABLES, TIAOZHUO
QIANLONG/JIAQING PERIODS (1736-1820)
A MAGNIFICENT AND VERY RARE PAIR OF LARGE IMPERIAL ZITAN CORNER-LEG ALTAR TABLES, TIAOZHUO QIANLONG/JIAQING PERIODS (1736-1820) Each table has a three-panel top set within the wide rectangular frame carved with a continuous border of keyfret above a narrow recessed lip and short waist finely carved in shallow relief with reserves of bats descending amidst clouds framed by ruyi heads on either side. The waist is bordered below by downward lotus lappets above shaped, beaded aprons carved with stylised archaistic dragons amidst archaistic scroll, confronted around a central taotie mask on each side. A similar design is repeated on the upper portion of the beaded, square legs flanking openwork spandrels carved with further archaistic dragon scroll. The legs terminate in thick, scroll-form feet. 35 1/2 in. (90 cm.) high, 106 3/8 in. (270 cm.) wide, 21 1/4 in. (54 cm.) deep (2)
