A LARGE MIRROR-BLACK-GLAZED AND GILT-DECORATED YEN YEN VASEKangxi
Very brightly gilt all around the lower baluster section with roundels and leaf-shaped panels of prunus blossom branches, bamboo, and other elaborate foliage, the design repeated on the tall trumpet neck, a band of lappets rising from the spreading foot, much of the gilding in unusually good original condition except around the foot. 43.5cm (17 1/4in) high.Footnotes清康熙 烏金釉描金開光花卉紋鳳尾尊

Distinguished from ordinary black glazes coloured with iron, the Kangxi period mirror-black glaze also includes manganese and cobalt as colourants; see P.Y.K.Lam, Shimmering Colours: Monochromes of the Yuan to Qing Periods, Hong Kong, 2005, p233. See a related mirror-black glazed vase but without gilt, illustrated in Ibid., p.234, pl.156.
