A LARGE ARCHIVE RELATED TO TIMOTHY LEARY, FROM THE ESTATE OF JOANNA HARCOURT-SMITH.LEARY, TIMOTHY. 1920-1996. The present lot comprises a large collection of manuscripts, audio tapes, correspondence, printed matter, and photographs of and relating to Timothy Leary and Joanna Harcourt-Smith, including: MANUSCRIPTS. Neurologic. Transmitted by Joanna and Timothy Leary. [Vacaville Prison, CA, 1973.] 4to. Typed Manuscript, [17] + 178, [10], [1] pp. Numerous corrections made with white-out and a few in holograph, one leaf with newspaper clipping pasted above text, some wrinkling and creasing to margins. ORIGINAL TYPESCRIPT CONTAINING EXPANSIVE SECTIONS NOT FOUND IN PUBLISHED EDITIONS, with a few minor corrections in Leary's hand. Neurologic is Leary's seminal essay describing his seven-circuit model of consciousness, a significant development in his theory of evolutionary neurology. Typed from California Medical Facility prison in Vacaville, California, the present manuscript differs substantially from all published editions of the text, as printed and distributed by Joanna Leary [Harcourt Smith], and later by Level Press [all 1973]. Those editions omit large portions of the present manuscript, including pp 12-57 - comprising the majority of Part I, "The Basic Transmissions," pp 64-70, 75-85, and other passages of similar length. They also omit the long poem which opens the first section of the manuscript, titled "This Galactic Transmitting Instrument was Kidnapped from Afghanistan for Your Enlightenment," a reference to the seizure of Timothy and Joanna Leary by U.S. Drug Enforcement agents in Kabul. WITH: Neurologic III. Xerox typescript, pagination erratic, possibly incomplete at beginning and elsewhere. Includes copies of holograph corrections but no original writing. AND WITH: [Neurologic Draft (Post-it title on cover)]. N.p., n.d. Approximately 150-200 pages. Xerox typescript, without corrections. In plastic sleeve. ---. The Twelve Extra-Terrestrial Stages of Evolution. Typescript, some ribbon and others xerox, several holograph corrections but largely clean. 46 pp, with xerox copy of sheets. Early draft typed by Harcourt-Smith for Leary, with textual questions in manuscript throughout. Apparently not separately published; possibly an early draft of Neurologic? ---. Exo-Psychology. In two folders. Extensive typescript with manuscript corrections, insertions, some of full page manuscript texts in Leary's hand. Some leaves extensively rewritten in holograph. Includes collaged pages of typographic designs and two folding illustrations of Tarot. Undated but c.1976. ---. "Some Personal Observations on the Emergence of Third Brain Imprints." Xerox typescript. 32 pages, 4to. ---. "Page of Card II" [Manuscript (xeroxed) title at head]. N.p., n.d. Approximately 100 pages, 4to. In plastic sleeve. On Tarot, extra-terrestrial migration, terrestrial evolution. Includes illustrations. Possibly an early draft of the 1979 work, The Game of Life. ---. "Terra II" [Cover title]. N.p., n.d. Approximately 90 pages. Comb binding. Xerox without corrections. Not on list. Written 1973-74, published 1974. Details Leary's plan to leave Earth on a spaceship and travel the universe, contacting higher intelligence along the way. WILSON, ROBERT ANTON, and ROBERT SHEA. The Golden Apple. 1975. 83 galley sheets, 9 x 26 inches, with three typed sheets of additions, 11 x 8 ½ inches. With manuscript note on reverse "Author's set." A few small corrections, generally clean. WILSON, ROBERT ANTON. "The Politics of PSI: Is the CIA Reading Your Mind?" Berkeley, circa 1976. Typescript, 4to, 9 pages. HOROWITZ, MICHAEL. "Apologia for Timothy Leary." San Francisco: 1974. Approximately 60 pages. Xerox. In 3-ring binder. With card covers. Biography and bibliography of Leary. RECORDINGS. 1.
