A LARGE APULIAN HYDRIA, BY THE VARRESE PAINTER , the frieze on the body showing seven women at their toilet, on the left sits a female figure holding a tall lotus flower stem looking towards an open casket which her companion holds, behind them sits another woman who is being passed a fan, watching is a seated figure holding a large shallow dish, in front a woman holding a mirror and a pouch in conversation with her companion who proffers an alabastron, above them hangs a fillet. Dividing the main frieze from the shoulder frieze is a panel enclosing a central female head in profile, emerging from acanthus leaves from which spring scrolling tendrils and flower stalks. A frieze around the shoulder depicts seven similar women, the three seated on the left in conversation, one holding a fan, another a closed casket, the two seated women on the right flanking a winged flying Eros. In the centre a seated youth looks at a woman who advances towards him, her companion crowning him with a wreath, a loutrophos between them. Details in added purple, white and yellow, the reverse and sides with multiple palmettes and scrolls, repaired with slight restoration, 4th Century B.C. 25in. (63.5cm.) high
