A large and impressive Victorian silver and silver-gilt eight day quarter-chiming mantel clock
ELKINGTON & CO., LIVERPOOL. CIRCA 1876
A large and impressive Victorian silver and silver-gilt eight day quarter-chiming mantel clock Elkington & Co., Liverpool. Circa 1876 The case surmounted by the figure of a classical female with serpent-entwined arm teaching a child to play a pipe, its base modelled with lion masks to the four angles, each trailing floral garlands, with hatched and cross-engraved panels, the front corners applied with substantial leaf cast mounts and the plinth gallery cast with cabochons within C-scrolls, the front with hinged cover to a cartouche with presentation inscription, with hallmarks for Frederick Elkington Birmingham 1876, the engraved dial with blue-enamelled chapters and minute track, conforming signature for ELKINGTON & CO. LIVERPOOL , the hands embellished with blue and green enamel (restored minute), the substantial triple chain and fusee movement with anchor escapement, quarter chimes on eight bells and hour strike on gong, with chime/silent selection to its rear 25½ x 25½ x 13¾ in. (65 x 65 x 35.5 cm.)
