A lacquered brass botanical simple microscope The box with trade label for James Robinson Dublin, mid 19th century The tube with threaded cap incorporating objective lens over apertures for a specimen slider secured by an internal sprung plunger retained by a threaded open collar at the base, 4.5cm (1.75ins) high, in a mahogany box applied with trade label JAMES ROBINSON OPTICIAN, AND PHILOSOPHICAL ARTIST, 65 Grafton Street, Dublin to inside of lid, the box 6cm (2.375ins) wide; with a Victorian portable monocular compound microscope, unsigned, late 19th century, the telescopic tube with single objective over rectangular stage and pivoted mirror frame, mounted via ball and socket joint onto a circular base, (mirror glass lacking), 16cm (6.25ins) approx. high, a lacquered brass and Bakelite simple hand-microscope, R. and J. Beck Limited, London, early 20th century, with large diameter lens set within moulded brass bezel mounted via threaded collar for focussing and three cylindrical supports onto a paddle-shaped stage with slide clips, light aperture and stamped R. & J. BECK LTD, 18cm (7ins) long; a lacquered brass simple tripod microscope, unsigned, late 19th century, with large diameter lens set within moulded bezel mounted via threaded collar for focussing on three turned supports, diameter 4.5cm (1.75ins), and a Victorian lacquered brass portable simple microscope, unsigned, mid to late 19th century with lens over cylindrical glass-lined body incorporating two rectangular light apertures and threaded collar for securing either on top of or within brass canister outer case, diameter 4.5cm (1.75ins), (5). Provenance: The Maurice Gillett collection of microscopy, inventory refs. G2580, G2576, G2565 and G2405. James Robinson is recorded in Clifton, Gloria Directory of British Scientific Instrument Makers 1550-1851 as working from 65 Grafton Street, Dublin, 1846-84. Gillett notes that the portable compound microscope in the current lot (G2567) is probably by Hartnack or Natchet and lists Edmund Hartnack as taking sole control of the firm which he formerly ran with Georges Oberhaeuser in 1860 later absorbing the business of A. Nachet in 1898. The partnership between Richard and Joseph Beck is recorded in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS AND RETAILERS 1660-1900 as established at 31 Cornhill, London in 1867 before moving to 68 Cornhill in 1881. The firm operated a relatively large factory at Lister Works, Kentish Town and became a Limited Company in around 1894.
