A Lacquer Writing Box ( Suzuribako ) and Matching Document Box ( Bunko ) Edo period (18th-19th century), Signed Toyo [Iizuka Toyo II (1766?-1844?)] and with kao (cursive monogram) and sealed Kanshosai in ; Lacquered Plum by Otani Yojuro The writing box square, decorated on the cover in two-colored gold takamaki-e with embellishments of hiramaki-e and kirigane with blossoming plum branches on a red mokume ground, the ends of the branches continuing to the sides of the box, the underside of the lid decorated with an open fan lacquered in sumi-e togidashi with bamboo and a kinji ground, a partially open fan lacquered in gold with cranes in low relief flying over waves and a closed fan of gold and brown togidashi clouds with red-lacquer sticks, the underside of lid signed in gold lacquer Toyo and with kao , the open fan signed Kanshosai ; the lower interior fitted with a rectangular inkstone, metal suiteki with traces of gilding cast with flowers on a stippled ground in a rectangular removable tray of nashiji disks on a black ground sprinkled with sparser nashiji , which is repeated on the removable untensil tray, lower interior and ground of the lid The document box matching with a proportionately larger blossoming plum extending more elaborately to the sides of the box, the underside of the lid lacquered with seven fans, one in gold takamaki-e with pines and a sumi-e togidashi riverscape, one gold lacquer with waves in hiramaki-e , one partially closed with cloud motifs in togidashi and red sticks, one with kinji hiramaki-e plovers over waves, one with silver sky and red clouds with red sticks, one closed gold-lacquer fan, and one open fan with red and gold dianthus flowers on a rogin and nashiji ground and red sticks, signed Toyo and sealed Kanshosai in , the ground of the cover and lower interior matching the nashiji grounds of the writing box Writing box 9 1/16 x 8 7/16 x 1¼in.
