Much of the text deals with the geographical and natural features of the island as well as aspects of Hawaiian culture. An English missionary, Rev. Ellis (1794-1872) was accompanied by three American missionaries - Asa Thurston, Artemas Bishop, and Joseph Goodrich - the "Journal" is a composite of their individual observations. Ellis rewrote and expanded the text and published his "Narrative of a Tour through the Hawaiian Islands" the following year. Forbes 600; Hill 545 (for the later work only).
