A group of five Ottoman enamelled copper Covered Dishes (sahan) from the Suleymaniye Workshop Constantinople, late 18th Century each of shallow form on a short foot-ring, the stepped domed covers with acorn-shaped knop finial, each decorated in gilt and polychrome, the central white band of the lids with floral bouquets, the green bands above and below variously with lattice and scale designs, each 16cm high, 20cm diameter The Ottoman Empire first developed a taste for European enamelled decoration in the 16th Century, sparked by the chronomania that swept Europe in this and the following centuries. The first enamelled timepieces made in Turkey probably coincided with the establishment of workshops in Galata, the European quarter of Constantinople in the mid-17th Century, where it is known that quite a few European makers and jewellers were working also. A clock signed “Sahin” and datable to circa 1650 can be seen in the Topkapi Saray, Istanbul (Williams, Haydn, et al., Enamels of the World 1700-2000. The Khalili Collection, London, 2009, fig. 31). In 18th Century Constantinople, copper objects such as covered dishes and bowls, cups and saucers, cup-stands and snuff boxes were often decorated with enamel. This group of wares, with their distinctive lively colours and floral decoration, like the present lot, are thought to have been made in workshops in the neighbouring streets of the Suleymaniye Mosque. A number of examples of this type have been sold at auction: Sotheby’s, The Turkish Sale, 11th October 1996, lot 111; The Turkish Sale, 17th October 1997, lots 19 and 20; The Turkish Sale, 16th October 1998, lot 20; Arts of the Islamic World, 1st April 2009, lot 174; Arts of the Islamic World, 6th October 2010, lot 335; and Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 14th June 2012, lot 58). Provenance: The property of a lady of title. N.B. It is thought rare to find a set of five such sahans that have survived together. Cf. Sotheby's, London, 3rd October 2012, lot 258 and Sotheby's London, 6th October 2010 lot 335. Condition report disclaimer
