Beschreibung:

A Classical style faux red velvet upholstered stained mahogany sofa.
Selznick International Pictures, 1939. There is likely not a sofa in the history of film with the pedigree of this beauty, having appeared in not only Gone with the Wind but in Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator (1940) and in publicity stills for Some Like It Hot (1959). In GWTW, the sofa can be seen in the sumptuous digs of Belle Watling (played by Ona Munsen), Atlanta's madam with a heart of gold. In the scene where Rhett Butler (played by Clark Gable) is confiding in Belle about his travails with Scarlett (and Belle, carrying the torch for Rhett, sadly listens), the sofa can be seen behind them. The sofa was then recovered for its appearance in Chaplin's The Great Dictator, the first statement film condemning Adolf Hitler (via Chaplin's brilliant comedy). The sofa takes center stage in the hilarious scene in which Chaplin and Jack Oakie are writhing on the couch after ingesting hot English mustard. Fast forward 19 years and another fabric change, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon are photographed reclining provocatively on the sofa in costume as women for possibly the greatest comedy ever made, Billy Wilder's Some Like It Hot. The publicity photos of the two on the sofa were disseminated to theaters worldwide and played a large part in the promotional campaign for the film. The sofa was used in other productions as well including Experiment Perilous (1944) with Hedy Lamarr and George Brent. Accompanied by a reproduction set still from Gone with the Wind showing the set in which the couch appears, 8 x 10 in., and provenance paperwork.
Provenance: Sotheby, Parke-Bernet, Important Collection of 18th and 19th Century French Furniture and Decorations, April 11, 12, 13 & 14, 1972, lot 200.
Height: 41 in.; width: 110 in.; depth 32.25 in.
