Interior of the back cover is engraved 'Presented to Thomas Handley Esq. by his personal friend Viscount Combermere at Waterloo, July 1815'. Marshal Viscount Combermere of Bhurtpore, G.C.B., G.C.H., G.T.S., K.S.F., K.S.I., Colonel, 1st Life Guards, served with great distinction in the Peninsular War (as Sir Stapleton Cotton) and was elevated to the peerage as Baron Combermere in 1814. He was advanced to Viscount in 1827 for the capture of Bhurtpore.
