A gold-damascened steel pencase with Qur'anic inscriptions and fitted inkwell, Turkey, circa 1900 cast steel, of cylindrical form with detachable lid at one end and detachable ink-well with screw-fitting and hinged fittings at the other, decorated in overlaid gold with foliate cartouches enclosing verses from the Qur'an in monumental thuluth script, the cartouches with palmette pendant-pieces, the interstices filled with arabeques in shaped panels, the lid with mirrored gold calligraphy in foliate cartouches, divided into registers by scroll borders, Persian inscriptions in nastaliq decorating the ends 31.6cm. length 4.1cm. diam.
