A GILT COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF VAJRAYOGININEPAL, 17TH/18TH CENTURY
Himalayan Art Resources item no. 4925
18.1 cm (7 1/8 in.) highFootnotes尼泊爾 十七/十八世紀 銅鎏金金剛瑜伽母像
Provenance:
With Claude de Marteau, Brussels, by 1970s
Vajrayogini is the principal female deity of the Chakrasamvara Tantra who enjoys widespread worship in all Tibetan Buddhist schools. Originating from the lineage of the mahasiddha Naropa, this animated form depicts Vajrayogini tilting her head upwards to the pure land of Khechara. She presses her left foot against the demon Bhairava, whose head is dramatically bent backwards, while her right foot subdues the struggling demoness Kalaratri.
Though made in Nepal, this figure draws much of its modeling from the 11th/12th century bronzes of Northeast India. This is most apparent in the thicker limbs, arm and legs bands, and broad face, as seen on another dakini sold at Christie's, New York, 21 September 2005, lot 80. The cross-hatched bone apron and necklace are also Pala conventions perpetuated in later works, including a 14th century painting of Machig Labdron (Amy Heller, Tibetan Art: Tracing the Development of Spiritual Ideals and Art in Tibet 600-2000 A.D., 1999, no. 65), as well as a Tsangri figure of Hevajra from the Claude de Marteau Collection, Part 3, sold in Bonhams, Paris, 12 June 2023, lot 9.
