A George III painted birdcage tripod table, in the manner of George Brookshaw circa 1770, cartouche shaped top with moulded edge, central reserve painted depicting a seated lady and winged putti within an architectural garden scene, turned stem, downswept legs and pad feet decorated with stylised anthemion, 71cm high, the top 85 x 68cm Originally from Birmingham, George Brookshaw set up a cabinet-making business in London in 1777. His workshop dealt almost exclusively in painted furniture, typically with closely observed floral decoration and figurative medallions adapted from engravings, chiefly after Angelica Kauffman. also operated as a teacher of flower painting (offering tuition to ‘Ladies of fashion’), and in the 1790s he abandoned his furniture practice in favour of publishing drawing manuals and a lavishly illustrated work on fruit growing, the ‘Pomona Britannica’. a suite of George III seat furniture attributed to George Brookshaw see Christies, Important English Furniture, 14th June 2001, London, King Street, Lot 55.
