Title: A Geographical Historie of Africa... Author: Leo, John Place: London Publisher: George Bishop Date: 1600 Description: [8], 60, 420 pp. pi4, a-e6, A-O6, Q-2N6. Translated by John Pory. Illustrated with an inserted folding frontispiece plate; plus two engraved maps (one double-page, the other folding) and two engraved views. Woodcut initials. (Small folio) 9¾x6½, later calf. First Edition in English. Wonderful copy of the first edition in English, with an extra map. John Leo (or Leo Africanus or Al Hassan Ibn Muhammad Al Wazzan) was a Moor born circa 1492 in Granada and raised in Morocco. Mostly all copies of this, his most famous work, are illustrated by only one map. The double-page map present here is original to this work. The copy at the Library of Congress also notes two plates; here they are city views of Tanger and of Algiers. The frontispiece and the larger folding map appear to be inserted from mid-17th century works. The folding map is by Overton, titled: "A New and Most Exact Map of Africa Described by N.I. Visscher and Don into English Enlarged and Corrected According to I. Bleau and Others", measures 16½x20½", and has many decorative border vignettes. This copy has a cancel pasted over the running title at the head of a4 verso, also noted in the John Carter Brown copy. STC 15481. Lot Amendments Condition: Skilfully rebacked and with later endpapers, covers rubbed and corners worn; title-page with an unobstrusive brown stain and a tiny rust-hole taking out one letter; frontispiece laid down and with a small corner supplied in facsimile, some pale dampstain to first map and margins of a text gathering, Overton map trimmed to neatline and with minor wear at folds; two marginal chips to text leaves, one with small loss to shoulder note, scattered mild few spots and toning; extremely good. Item number: 166861
