A FRENCH GOLD-LINED IVORY SNUFF-BOX AND A RUSSIAN ENAMELLED PILL-BOX by Alexandre-Jean-Marie Leferre (fl. 1837 - after 1860), marked, with the third standard and excise marks for gold, Paris 1819-1838, and the third standard mark for gold, France 1838-1919, the ivory parts Cantonese, made for export, the other box Russian, 1859, with the 72 zolotniki mark for 18-carat gold Rectangular box, the exterior front, base and sides of deeply carved ivory, the hinged cover depicting Chinoiserie figures, pagodas and prunus trees, the sides and base similarly decorated with willow and polonia trees, with incorporated thumbpiece, the interior gold-lined; together with an octagonal gold pill-box with translucent green enamelled domed cover on a starburst ground centred with a translucent orange and red enamelled lute, flanked by two treble clefs, the sides engraved with foliate scrolls, raised thumpiece 3 3/8 in. (86 mm.) and 1¼ in. (32 mm.) wide, respectively (2)
