A fine Victorian gilt brass mounted figured walnut library mantel clock W. Barnsdale, London, third quarter of the 19th century The five pillar twin chain fusee gong striking movement with anchor escapement regulated by lenticular bob pendulum, the 4.25 inch circular silvered brass Roman numeral dial signed W. BARNSDALE, LONDON to centre and with blued steel spade hands set behind hinged cast brass bevel glazed bezel with canted fillet insert bordering dial, the case with cast gilt brass hipped 'gadroon' surmount to the cavetto moulded upstand over conforming cornice and shaped Brass line inlaid panel beneath dial, the sides with anthemion and foliate scroll cast and pierced arched frets, the rear with rectangular glazed door, on brass capped skirt base with ogee bracket feet, 29cm (11.5ins) high. William Barnsdale is recorded in Loomes, Brian Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World, Volume 2 as a London-based chronometer maker born in 1834 and succeeded his father, James, in 1869; he died in 1921.
