A FINE SWISS VARI-COLOR GOLD, ENAMEL, AND PEARL-SET SINGING-BIRD SNUFF BOX BOX MARK OF JEAN-GEORGE-RÉMOND; MECHANISM ATTRIBUTED TO FRÈRES ROCHAT, GENEVA, CIRCA 1815 The rectangular box finely chased with scrolling foliage in vari-colored gold against a matted ground on cover and borders of sides and base; the cover with a hinged oval panel finely painted with an enameled bouquet of flowers within a border of split pearls, opening to reveal a mechanical bird that pivots, flaps its wings, turns its head, and moves its ivory beak while the box plays birdsong, two folk tunes, and birdsong again; the snuff compartment cover engraved inside with family provenance; marked inside snuff compartment with trace of maker’s mark ; in original fitted tooled red leather case with key compartment and lined with silk and galooning, the case later applied with a silver plaque engraved with further family provenance 3 1/8 in.
