A fine pair of late 18th-Century 18-inch diameter English library globes, by Dudley Adams, the terrestrial Britanniarum REGI Augustissimo GEORGIO TERTIO Scientiarum Cultori pariter et Præsidio Globum hunc Terrestrem, Omnes hactenus exploratos terrarum tractus, Ad Observationes Navigantium Itinerantium, et Astronomorum recentiores, accuratissimè descriptos exhibentem, Grati animi et pietatis monumentum, D.D.Q. Omni cultu et officio devinctissimus D. Adams. Made by D. ADAMS, Globe Maker to the King, ins. t Maker to his Majesty's Ordn. c e, & Optician to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales, n o60 Fleet Street London 1797 , made up of two sets of twelve hand-coloured engraved split gores, the equatorial graduated in degrees on amplitude and azimuth, hours and minutes, the ecliptic and equinoctial colure graduated in degrees, another colure in the Pacific from 66.5°N (Arctic Circle) to 23.5°S (Tropic of Capricorn) graduated 0-90°, with parallel dotted lines between the Tropics, the oceans with loxodrome lines radiating from the equator at 30°W and 150°W, some shipping routes, trade winds and the tracks of Cook, Furneaux, Anson and Clerke, a note by Hawaii Here Capt. Cook was Kill'd , the polar circles with parallel lines every 1°, the Antarctic with no land shown but various notes relating to mountains of ice and similar, the continents finely detailed with nation states delicately outlined in green, pink and yellow, showing towns, cities and rivers, with innumerable notes, Africa showing This Country abounds in manna , Azarad Desert where no Water is found for the space of 60 Leagues and others, China showing the Great Wall, Australia labelled HOLLANDIA NOVA with little interior detail and projected southern coastline joining with Terra de Diemen 1648 , North America with little detail in the north-west but showing the territories of various Indian nations, the Stony Mountains in pictorial relief and no northern coastline but joined to Greenland, northern Alaska labelled This Continent disc. by Capt. Cook 1778 ( some minor areas of discolouration and neat repair to North Pole ); the celestial Britanniarum REGI Augustissimo GEORGIO TERTIO Astronomorum Patrono Munificentissimo, Celeberrimo Globum hunc Cælestum, Novam et Emendatiorem Cæli Imaginem, Sydera apud Africæ Promontorium Australe nuperrimè observata, Atq. Stellas Catalogi Flamstediani Universas verè exprimentem, Grati animi et pietatis monumentum, D.D.Q. Omni cultu et officio devinctissimus D. Adams. Made by D. ADAMS Globe Manufacturer & Mathematical Instrum. t Maker, Fleet Street, London made up of two sets of twelve hand-coloured engraved split gores laid to the ecliptic poles, the axis through the celestial poles, the equatorial graduated in degrees, hours and minutes, the ecliptic graduated in 12x 1-30° and days of the month, with twilight zone, the constellations finely depicted by mythical beasts and figures and scientific instruments and named in Latin, English, Greek and some in Arabic and listing the component stars, the stars shown to seven orders of magnitude and many labelled with Greek or Roman letters ( minor areas of discolouration and light restoration ); both spheres with an engraved brass meridian circle, the terrestrial graduated with a calendar scale to the reverse at the North Pole, with a movable brass quadrant of altitude, the mahogany horizon with hand-coloured engraved paper circle showing degrees, days of the month and of the houses of the Zodiac, wind directions and Saint's Days, raised on three square-section tapering legs with curved stretchers to the meridian support ( replacements ) and a glazed compass mounted near the base ( replacement ) -- 115.5cm.
