A fine pair of Chinese gilt-metal mounted biscuit porcelain parrot candelabra, the porcelain Kangxi (1662-1722), the mounts French circa 1740-1760, the parrots glazed in turquoise and aubergine and the mounts finely worked with charming cast small details to the foot rim including a lizard, Rothschild label no. 235, 22.5cm high (2) Provenance: Anthony Gustav de Rothschild, 1887-1961, the collection principally formed by him in the 1920s and 1930s Mrs Renée Robeson, (née de Rothschild), 1927-2015, believed gifted to her by Anthony de Rothschild in the late 1930s or 1940s By family decent and sold by order of a member of the de Rothschild Family Literature: Compare with another almost identical pair at Ascott House and illustrated in, The Anthony de Rothschild Collection of Chinese Ceramics, Regina Krahl, 1996, no. 250 and another pair in the Victoria and Albert, with almost identical mounts, accession number 813-1882. Kangxi Chinese porcelain parrots of this model exist in various colours including polychrome, blanc-de-chine and, as in the present case, turquoise and aubergine. They were mounted in France throughout the 18th Century, a fashion which was promoted by marchands-merciers, such as Lazare Duvaux or Simon-Philippe-Poirier, who are both known to have sold these wares. Two pairs of turquoise parrots mounted with ormolu bases are recorded in the Livre Journal of Lazare Duvaux: one pair was delivered to M. de Presle on 7 November 1752 for 360 livres, another to M. d'Azincourt on 2 October 1754 for 432 livres. A pair of turquoise-glazed parrots were later supplied to Marie-Antoinette for Versailles, and are illustrated in P.
