A fine George III needlework sampler by Margret Wise, dated 1798, embroidered in coloured silk thread on a cream ground, with central verses on VIRTUE, FRIENDSHIP and COMMANDMENT within a square reserve with alphabet margins and signature MODBURY, Margret Wise, ten years, January 14th 1798, , surrounded by a dove, a dragon, butterflies, trees and foliage, within a further border of trailing flowers and leaves, later framed ang glazed, 36 x 41cm overall; and another early Victorian sampler by Jane Barker, dated 1839, with verse titled RELIGION surrounded by a pagoda, a hound, a deer and oak leaves, signed to the lower register, framed and glazed, 56 x 45cm overall Provenance: Private Collection from a Grade II listed Country House, Oxfordshire The sampler by Margret Wise purchased by the current vendor from Maureen Morris, Saffron Walden, Essex, 23.2.1991 (£800).
