A FINE ENGLISH BULLET CROSSBOW By Jonathon Johnson, Wigan, circa 1750 With slender steel bow, later strings and spacers, built-in gaffle engraved with chevrons and retained by a catch at the rear, signed back-sight en suite (some wear), sprung fore-sight, straight fluted ebony stock of rectangular section with iron mounts, and small mother-of-pearl roundel on the underside, inlaid in front of the lock with a shaped silver decorative panel and a small slotted iron plate to protect the stock from the sear, engraved trigger-guard, and unusual boot-shaped iron pommel (iron parts with scattered minor surface pitting) 29¼in.
