A Fine Collection of Racing Tickets and Passes, the Property of a North Country Collector ISLE OF MAN, Isle of Man Race Co, a uniface ivory Free Ticket to Grand Stand, 41mm, 10.25g (W –; D & W –; Quarmby –; Mackay –; cf. Cain 2798). Pierced for suspension, fine, extremely rare; only three specimens known £400-600 Footnote Provenance: J.F. Crellin Collection; Chrystals Auction (Douglas), 22 June 1983, lot 173 (part); R.J. Ford Collection, Part I, Spink Auction 79, 15 October 1990, lot 251 (part). The early history of horse racing on the Isle of Man has not been closely documented but it is known that racing was held at Peel, Douglas and Ramsey in the period 1811-14. Peter Mitchell’s footnote in the Ford sale catalogue infers that John Crellin, of Ballachurry Andreas, gave land on Camlork, Kirk Braddan, for the race course, but the ivory tickets are not to be confused with the later brass clichés of c. 1870 also thought to have been used at Camlork. Sold with much further background information
