A fine and detailed builder's mirror-back half model of the twin screw steamer United States , built by Alexander Stephan & Sons Ltd. Glasgow for Det Forenede Dampskibs - Selskab, Copenhagen,1903, with cutaway masts and funnel, anchor and davit, capstan, fairleads, bollards, ventilators, deck rails, companionways, deck winches, derricks, hatches, decklights, detailed superstructure with open bridge with helm, binnacles, telegraphs, engine room lights, passenger seating, eight lifeboats in davits with bottom boards and thwarts, four 'folding' lifeboats, aft steam winch, rope drums and much other fine detailing. The hull, finished in red and black with white decks, lacquer and gold-plated fittings, has port holes, boarding companionway, propeller and rudder, and is mounted in the original mahogany glazed case (finials missing) , against the original front-silvered mirror (cracked, silvering tarnished) -- 30½ x 149½in.
