A Dutch Friesland staartklok with automata and alarm, second half 19th century The case of typical form, the breakarch hood with spiral-twist pilasters and beaded mouldings, sound frets to the sides, giltwood angel and Atlas finials, with ripple-moulded border above the tail, the latter with scroll sides and glazed lenticle, with pendulum swinging to the middle, the arched dial with white chapter ring painted on a ground in the manner of a theatrical curtain, the centre painted with cherubs, with brass hands and alarm settting ring, an aperture below revealing a backdrop decorated as a fairground scene, with a balloonist swinging across the front with the beat of the pendulum, two figures emerging from doors at the sides with the strike of the hour, the twin train movement with baluster pillars, typical red painted plates, with anchor escapement and countwheel strike and alarm on bell -- 57in. (146cm.) high
