Title: A Correct Map of the Bay of San Francisco and the Gold Region from actual Survey June 20th 1849 for J.J. Jarves. Embracing all the new Towns, Ranchos, Roads, Dry & Wet Diggings, with their several distances from each other Author: Jarves, James Jackson Place: Boston Publisher: James Munroe & Co. Date: 1849 Description: Lithographed map. 36.5x30 cm (14½x11¾"). Early map of the gold region encompassing the San Francisco Bay Area east to the Sierra Nevada and north to just above the Yuba River. Wheat describes the map at some length, noting in part that "on this map signs signifying 'diggings' appear on most of the Sierra streams, from the 'Toualumie' on the south to the 'Yubu' and Feather on the north. From Sutter's Fort a road is shown leading north, one branch going to 'Nicholas' and 'Hock,' and another to a crossing of 'Bear Creek' at 'Johnson' and proceeding to 'Cordua' on the 'Yubu.'" Warren Heckrotte comments that "The map in Johnson's Sights in the Gold Region, 2nd ed, 1850, bears a close enough resemblance to this one to suggest a common source. The map in Johnson's book states that it was based on actual survey directed by Com. Jones. This would indicate survey and map was done by naval officer. Only naval officer making maps that I can think of is Lt. Blair. Ringgold arrived here too late to make map." Further Notes from the Files of Warren Heckrotte Full title: A Correct Map of the Bay of San Francisco and the Gold Region from actual Survey June 20th. 1849 for J.J. Provenance: Essex Institute (by auction thru Ross Valley Book Company), 1/82 An unpublished study of this map (I have a copy) locates 10 copies besides mine; mine is in best condition of all. Orozco y Berra lists a German edition of this map; no. 1070 & 1439. High Ridge copy (Cat 9, 9/85) was used by traveller; has inscribed note which reads: "Map by which D. Flagg went in boat from San F. to crossing on Stanislaus River - July 22d-1850. - He was a 49'er" On Stanislaus is cross with notation "buried boat". This is only reference to use of gold region map that I know of. References: W-GR 100 ( Rep ). Streeter, earlier state, 2540.
