PROBABLY FRENCH, CIRCA 1740
A CONTINENTAL SILVER-MOUNTED AND INLAID EBONY NECCESSAIRE PROBABLY FRENCH, CIRCA 1740 Octagonal with collapsible scroll handle, raised on eight pomegranate feet, inlaid with scrolls, flowers and fruit, the panels with pinned-on silver borders, rococo escutcheon to front, lined in dark red velvet edged with gold braid, containing two clear glass and two ruby glass scent bottles of flattened pear shape with silver caps, a snuff box of cartouche form with amber cover, two silver etuis, one plain, the other fluted, an unmarked silver spoon, an amber seal, a fluted and star-cut glass dish, the silver rim with Paris discharge mark for 1738/1744, two silver handles, a two-pronged steel fork, a silver scent funnel, an amber-handled magnifying glass, the glass within tortoiseshell rim and an unmarked silver swing-handled oval container with fixed central divider and two octagonal silver bottles, one for sand or powder, the other with cork-fitted stopper for ink, the latter with ring-pull handle 8 ¼ in. high (21 cm.), 7 ½ in. wide (19 cm.)
