A CONTINENTAL SILVER-GILT RELIQUARY OF GOTHIC STYLE
MARKS INDISTINCT, POSSIBLY BELGIAN, CIRCA 1859
A CONTINENTAL SILVER-GILT RELIQUARY OF GOTHIC STYLE MARKS INDISTINCT, POSSIBLY BELGIAN, CIRCA 1859 Of architectural form incorporating various saints, on octagonal foot chased with diaperwork panels and the Instruments of the Passion with ropework straps and pierced band of quatrefoils, the rim of the foot with Latin inscripton dated 1859, the upper foot rim with an additional later Latin inscription dated 1908, on detatchable base, the metal centre on eight silver gilt angel supports, the central cylindrical glass container with a relic of St Albertus, together with an old wax seal (presumably a confirmation of the authenticity of the relic) 33½ in. (85.1 cm.) high 330 oz. (10240 gr.)
