Beschreibung:

[ETCHINGS] A collection of original etchings; consisting of 17 original plates, by Cornelius Bega 1654; 25 ditto, by Claude 1660; 3 ditto, by Dominique Barriere 1651... London: J. McCreery, 1816 folio (417 x 257mm.), letterpress title-page, 197 (of 200) prints pasted to guards (usually more than one to a page), with a loose print of St Francis inserted, contemporary half morocco, spine gilt in compartments, gilt edges, lacking 3 plates, binding scraped; sold as a collection of prints not subject to return This volume contains prints by Cornelius Bega, Claude Lorrain Dominique Barrière Horizonti, Wenceslas Hollar, Theodor van Kessel, Peter de Laer, Rembrandt, Vivares, van Vliet, Thomas Wyck Ruysdael, together with prints after some of these artists. It is the first of four such collections of prints (contemporary printings on wove paper from old copper plates) that were issued between 1816 and 1826, as a result of the distribution of the copper plates of the artists in the early nineteenth century. "This collection is now almost impossible to find as it is to be supposed that surviving copies have been broken up for sale of the individual prints" (Pennington, Hollar, p. liv). Copac records one copy of this edition, at the University of London Library. The volume includes Hollar's series of costume plates of women from 1643, van Kessel's Alcune animali series of 1654, and eight of van Vliet's prints of beggars (1632). PROVENANCE: J.W. Brougham, inscription on title-page dated 1824
