BY J. PURDEY, LONDON, SERIAL NO. 941 FOR 1826
A CASED 16-BORE DOUBLE-BARRELLED PERCUSSION SPORTING GUN BY J. PURDEY, LONDON, SERIAL NO. 941 FOR 1826 With slightly shortened twist sighted barrels signed 'J. PURDEY No. 314½ OXFORD STREET, LONDON' on the rib, border and shell engraved patent breeches each with short platinum-inlaid line and pierced platinum plug, scroll engraved tang and locks, the latter each signed 'PURDEY', walnut half-stock with no provision for a ramrod, chequered grip and fore-end, border and scroll engraved iron mounts including the trigger-plate with shell finial, and dark horn fore-end tip, London proof marks, in associated fitted oak case lined with green baize and with accessories comprising a brown leather belt attachment for a ramrod, a detachable head possibly for the ramrod, two nipple wrenches, one of which incorporating a turnscrew, pricker and spare nipple trap, and two leather shot-flasks, the lid with remnants of a trade label, the exterior with flush-fitting brass carrying handle and circular brass escutcheon 28in (71cm) barrels
