Late Edo Period, 19th century A 32 plate russet iron ridged bowl helmet (suji bachi kabuto) mounted with a six stage mixed metal mount to the top (tehen kanamono), each ridge covered with gilded so-fukurin with gilt igaki plates at the base, the neck guard of small rounded form (ko manju jikoro). Mounted on the peak, a small gilt coiled dragon and fitted with a modern gilt wood dragon fore crest (maedate). Russet iron face mask (menpo) with standing flanges on the cheeks (ya-dome) and a hair moustache. Black lacquered iron sleeves (oda gote), small shoulder guards of false lamellae (kiritsuki kozane ko sode). The cuirass in two pieces of horizontal russet iron plates laced at the top and bottom. The plates overlaid front and back with repeated silvered cherry blossom studs, on the right side a silvered ring and on the back the fittings for a small banner (sashimono). Thigh guards of ribbed rectangular plates and solid plate shin guards. The horse bit (kutsuwa) badge of the Shimazu family appears in silver on the ear pieces of the helmet, the gyoyo on the cuirass and on the back of each hand. Together with a pair of russet iron armpit protectors (wakibiki), with an armour box and a wood stand.
